Discover the environmental benefits of paperboard and its impact on sustainability. Learn why paperboard is an excellent choice as a renewable packaging material and how it reduces carbon footprint.
Holmen Board and Paper produces multi-layered paperboard. By combining several layers we achieve a higher stiffness, which means that the goods inside a package can be protected with less packaging material. Both our product families, Invercote and Incada, are engineered to perfection with fresh fibres only, due to our customer’s needs for high quality and consistency.
Another characteristic is the smooth printing surface, which enables our customers to make packages who really stand out on the shelf. High quality and consistency are also a guarantee that there will be no surprises, less production stoppages and a predictable result.
We asked the Swedish Environmental Institute, IVL, to make a comparison between packages made out of paperboard and plastic materials.
The study was based on the carbon footprints of the materials used, and included the production of the material, recycling and waste management.

Circularity
We manufacture fresh fibre paperboard, which is very well suited for recycling. After use, our paperboards can become a valuable input to the world’s recycling systems. Without a steady input of fresh fibre, recycled paperboard would not exist as they eventually reach their end of life.

Climate change is the biggest challenge of our time, and we all need to reduce our climate impact. This has induced new ways of thinking, even changing business models.
A clear trend is the search for sustainable packaging materials with low carbon footprint – and this has led to the transition from materials with a higher carbon intensity to paperboard.
