A world-class paperboard mill in the UK that excels in producing premium folding boxboard using fossil-free bioenergy, ensuring carbon neutrality and meeting modern packaging demands.
Producing a folding boxboard (FBB) is a demanding process. Incada, the paperboard produced at the Workington mill in the UK, is of the highest quality and holds a prominent position in the market.
Continuous development and adaptation to customer needs and expectations are essential for success in a highly competitive market. Workington Mill is an integrated pulp and paperboard mill. Since 2013, it has been fully powered by fossil-free, carbon-free bioenergy. Bleached mechanical pulp is processed to suit the specific requirements of paperboard production and combined with purchased bleached chemical pulp to create a multi-layered board construction that best meets the needs of modern paperboard packaging.
In 2013, a biomass boiler was inaugurated at the Workington mill, an investment made possible by the long-term perspective of our majority owner. The mill, which previously relied on fossil fuel for energy, is now carbon neutral, powered 100% by bioenergy. The resulting reduction in carbon dioxide emissions is equivalent to taking 65 000 EU average cars off the road (on a daily, annual or any basis). We actively advocate for local landowners to diversify their crops by growing willow as a source of bioenergy.
The finishing process is a key component of Holmen Iggesund's customer service, as this work directly impacts delivery times and integration into the customer's operations. The production of paperboard is a demanding industrial process. Paperboard manufacturers have the difficult task of balancing the demands of the economy of their production through long production runs with the demands of the market for customised products, formats and deliveries. For this reason, finishing the paperboard on-site at the mill has become vital to meeting customer demands over the long term without negatively impacting the mill's production costs.

The folding boxboard produced at Workington is constructed in several plies and is a combination of chemically and mechanically produced pulp. The chemical pulp is purchased from other manufacturers, whilst Workington produces the mechanical pulp. This involves grinding up the timber, which results in a pulp that adds stiffness and thickness to the paperboard.
